Hurricane Preparedness - Have a Pet Plan

For those of us who have pets, they are a part of our family.  Since most shelters and hotels have strict policies on pets, you want to be sure you have a plan in case you need to evacuate.  By taking these few simple steps, you can reduce a lot of anxiety during an emergency.
  • Make sure your pets are current on their vaccinations and have proof of the vaccinations handy.  Shelters may require proof before you can bring your pet in.
  • Have a photo of your pet.
  • Keep a collar and identification on your pet.
  • Have a properly sized pet carrier for each animal.
  • Have a pet disaster supply kit which includes a proper identification collar and rabies tag, proper identification on all belongings, a carrier or cage, a leash, an ample supply of food, water and food bowls, any necessary medications, specific care instructions and news papers or trash bags for clean up.  Shelters will require these items.
  • If you are going to a shelter, space may be limited so call ahead and determine availability.
We love our pets.  Take the proper steps to ensure their safety.
